Do I need a referral for PT?

In California, you do not need a referral from an MD or DO to be able to go see a Physical Therapist, especially if they are a fee-for-service PT business. PT’s have direct access in California - meaning a patient can see a PT for their first line of service. This is great news because Physical Therapists are the experts in movement issues, musculoskeletal injuries, and other conditions that affect movement/ability to get around.

PT’s also have great assessment skills in evaluating what line of treatment would be the best for a particular injury or pain. PT’s have extensive training in screening for more serious problems that can mimic musculoskeletal problems such as heart issues, nerve issues, and brain/cognitive issues. We may not be the best, most appropriate provider to help with those problems, but we understand that and can refer you to the right people. We can help steer you in the right direction.

Concierge PT does not require a referral or prescription for PT. On the other hand, many insurance carriers require a referral for PT, and that is why most people think they need a referral for PT. Even with this rule, you can still be seen by a PT for 45 days, or 12 visits (whichever comes first).

PT offers so many benefits and can assess and treat most musculoskeletal and neurological issues. So if you’re experiencing pain, injuries, or just want to feel better moving - make an appointment today with Pacific Standard Physical Therapy.

All the best!
